My “new” music — old song edition

Recently I went on a buying spree of songs that I used to have on CD, but got rid of at some point or another (as usual, ruthlessly trimming the CD collection):

Blur, “Tender”, “Coffee & TV”, “Music Is My Radar” The first two are my favorite tracks off 13, my least favorite Blur album.  The last is the only song here I’ve never heard before, the (then) new track off their greatest hits collection.

New Order, “Regret” One of New Order’s poppiest singles, but also a long-time favorite of mine.  I always said they should have more guitar in their songs.

New Order, “Ceremony” Actually I bought both recorded versions of “Ceremony”, because I bought the original version (which had a more Joy Division-like sound) by mistake first, when it was the 12″ version that I was looking for.

Kasabian, “L.S.F.”, “Test Transmission” My two favorite tracks off their debut album.

Underworld, “Born Slippy Nuxx” Terribly overplayed thanks to Trainspotting, but I still love this song.  There’s a terribly melancholy, detached feel to it which contrasts brilliantly with the intensity of the driving beats.

Snow Patrol, “Run” Although Snow Patrol has always seemed like the type of band that I’d like, I’ve never gotten that into them — with the exception of this song.

My Bloody Valentine, Glider EP My original introduction to shoegaze, picked up used for 99¢ my freshman year in college.  It wasn’t nearly as great as the follow-up Tremolo EP (to say nothing of the peerless Loveless), so I eventually sold this off, but it’ll be nice to have a digital copy around when I’m in the mood.

Swervedriver, “She Weaves A Tender Trap” Off Swervedriver’s fourth and final album, 99th Dream.  Landing halfway between shoegaze and anthemic Britpop, the album was actually not nearly as good as it should have been.  But this song is absolutely top notch.

My Bloody Valentine covering “We Have All The Time In The World”

Whoa, how could I be completely unaware of this 1993 track by My Bloody Valentine?!?  They’re covering “We Have All The Time In The World”, the “love theme” from the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, originally sung by Louis Armstrong (the last song he ever recorded, I believe).

There are a couple reasons that I’m so amazed that I’ve never heard this before.  The first is that it’s the second-to-last official release by the band (followed only by a Wire cover in ‘96), and I was crazy into MBV at the time.  The second is that I absolutely adore the original 1969 version.  The third is that I “discovered” the song today while I was cleaning off my hard drive.  Apparently I’ve had a copy of it sitting around for at least three or four years, and never listened to it before.  Ugh.

It’s a great cover, though it doesn’t stray too far from the original, other than the pretty radical change of Louis Armstrong’s vocals to a purring Belinda Butcher.  I do miss the delicate picked guitar fills on the original, though.

Subsequent thoughts on My Bloody Valentine live at the Concourse Exhibition Center, San Francisco, 30-Sept-2008

I’ll confess that I spent the first half of this year in a bit of a bubble, music-wise. Serious personal upheaval (of the good kind), no time to go record shopping, etc. I wasn’t even aware that My Bloody Valentine had gotten back together, were playing UK dates, were playing at All Tomorrow’s Parties, were launching a US tour, were talking about belatedly finishing their follow-up to Loveless and recording a new album as well. But it’s all true! (well, I’ll believe there’s a new MBV album when I’m holding it in my goddamn fingers)

When I finally did realize that not only had MBV reformed, but they were playing a concert in San Francisco in less than a week, I got giddy with excitement.  Just watching the YouTube clips of their ATP show sent shivers down my spine.  I listened to Loveless endlessly back in the early 90’s, but I never saw the band live. Finally, after all these years, a chance to rectify that.

And how was it? Loud as holy fuck. And pretty awesome.

First thoughts on My Bloody Valentine live at the Concourse Exhibition Center, San Francisco, 30-Sept-2008

Holy.  Fucking.  Shit.

Or: The closest I’ve come to an epileptic seisure since seeing Spiritualized in 2003.

Or: I now know what it’s like to stand next to a 747 while it’s taking off.

My Bloody Valentine

How badly do I wish that I went to see My Bloody Valentine at All Tomorrow’s Parties?

Loveless is, hands down, my favorite album of all time.  It also has the distinction of being the only “classic” record that I actually got into by myself, before it gained its critical adulation, thanks to picking up their earlier Glider e.p. when I found it in a 99¢ bin following a positive review in L.A. Weekly.  It’s kind of weird when you felt like you were enjoying an album in complete isolation – nobody I knew back then were into it, or had even heard of the band – and later it starts showing up on “best of the decade” lists in the top slot.

Anyway, Stereogum has kindly posted photos and videos of the show.  Just listening to the videos, bad audio and sunken vocals and all, makes me shiver with nostalgic excitement.

I must be getting old.  All my blog posts are about bands ten or twenty years past their prime.
