To garner publicity for their forthcoming album Dig Out Your Soul, Oasis had a bunch of New York subway musicians fan out across the city to play tracks from it. Stereogum has clips of duo Dagmar playing several songs. Not exactly something I could watch all day, but amusing.

Noel Gallagher gets the shove
On the off-chance that somebody reading here didn’t see this elsewhere ….
Last night during the Oasis set at the Virgin Festival in Toronto, a member of the audience jumped onstage and pushed Noel Gallagher down, before being grabbed by security.
Here’s the video (jump ahead to around 1:30 if you have ADD):
You can read more about it on Pitchfork (with snarky commentary) or StereoGum (whose report is mildly lighter on snark) or the NME (who really are no fun at all). Apparently the band came back on after a five minute break to finish the set (minus a rumored guest appearance by Paul Weller), after which Noel was sent off to the hospital to be examined for a “suspected fractured rib and ligament damage”. The assailant was arrested.
(tangentially related reminisces below the fold)
et tu, Oasis?
Oh, so now Oasis have a new album coming out too? It’s like 1997 never even went away! I just picked up the Verve’s new album today, and now I have something else to feel embarrassed and old about when I buy it in a couple months.
The single is called “The Shock of the Lightning”, which is a pretty dumb name but the song is actually pretty fun, in a limited sort of way. It sounds a bit like those occasional punkish songs they’d throw on as a b-side in the early days (“Headshrinker”, “Fade Away”, et al), but with a bit of a psychedelic edge, some droning organ in the background. On the downside, it’s not nearly as energetic as those earlier songs, doesn’t have much of a hook, and – despite clocking in at over four minutes – it doesn’t really go anywhere, either. So it’s probably not going to change anyone’s opinions on the band, much less restore them to their previous bigger-than-Jesus heights. But it has some fire to it, which I don’t remember thinking about anything on their last album, and honestly, I like the tossed-off feel of the song. It makes me hopeful that the entire album will be a bit more raw.
They’re streaming the video off the official Oasis website right now, so you can check it out there. Pretty silly video, but then I find most videos silly.
The single gets its official release on September 29th, and the album, Dig Out Your Soul, follows a week later, October 6th, in the UK, and October 7th in the US.
